Membership Application and Selection Procedure

Membership of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts is a lifetime honour conferred upon individuals who have made distinguished contributions in the sciences, arts, or humanities.

The following procedure ensures a rigorous and fair selection process, in line with international academic practice.

I. Membership Categories

Member

Conferred upon individuals who have achieved outstanding and widely recognised accomplishments in their field.

Corresponding Member

Conferred upon mid-career scholars or artists who have demonstrated significant achievements and show exceptional promise for future contributions.

II. Eligibility

Open to candidates of any nationality. Selection is based on:

  • Recognised excellence in natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, or the arts;
  • Positive impact on Luxembourgish or international scholarly/cultural life;
  • Commitment to engage with the Academy's interdisciplinary activities.

III. Nomination and Application

Candidates may be nominated or may apply directly:

Nomination by Members

Joint nomination by at least two current Academy Members, with detailed letters of recommendation.

Institutional Nomination

Official letter from a recognised university, research institution, or learned society.

Self-application

Direct submission to the Secretariat, accompanied by at least two independent reference letters from international experts (non-members).

IV. Application Materials

Submit electronic copies (in English, French, or German) to: membership@lasa.lu

  • Completed application form (including CV)
  • Summary of key achievements and representative works
  • Statement of intent for future collaboration with the Academy
  • Letters of recommendation (if applicable)

V. Selection Process

    Eligibility check by the Secretariat.

    Peer review by the relevant disciplinary section (anonymous).

    Review Committee deliberation: The Council and Section Chairs nominate candidates by anonymous ballot.

    Council final approval: Election requires a two-thirds majority vote of the full Council.

VI. Conferral

New members are inducted at a ceremony held at an appropriate time, receiving a certificate and the Academy's insignia.

VII. Interpretation

The Council of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts holds the final right of interpretation and reserves the right to modify the procedure, membership quotas, or selection criteria as necessary.
