LASA Registered as a Non-Profit Association in Luxembourg

The Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts completed an important stage in its institutional development on 3 May 2024, when its statutes and founding information were deposited, registered and published in Luxembourg’s Electronic Register of Companies and Associations.

The Academy is registered under the legal name Luxemburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste.

What the Registration Means

Registration as an ASBL establishes LASA as a non-profit legal entity operating under Luxembourg law.

The Academy can act in its own institutional name, manage its resources, maintain a bank account, enter into appropriate cooperation arrangements and organise activities that are consistent with its statutes.

The registration also creates responsibilities.

LASA must operate according to its registered purposes, maintain appropriate records, follow its governance procedures and ensure that its resources are used for the objectives of the organisation.

The Academy’s governing bodies are responsible for institutional decision-making, financial administration, membership records, annual reporting and other matters required by its statutes and applicable law.

What the Registration Does Not Mean

LASA is an independent non-profit academic organisation. Its registration does not make it a government agency, a state authority or a public university.

It should therefore not be described as an official body of the Luxembourg Government or as an institution exercising governmental powers.

The Academy’s credibility must be developed through the quality of its governance, its academic and cultural activities, its partnerships and the transparency of its public communications.

Legal registration is an essential foundation, but it is not a substitute for substantive academic work.

LASA intends to build its profile gradually through realistic programmes, responsible cooperation and accurate public information.

A Framework for International Cooperation

The statutes of LASA provide a broad basis for cooperation with universities, research institutes, academic organisations, cultural institutions and other relevant partners.

Possible areas of cooperation include:

• academic seminars and interdisciplinary discussions

• educational and cultural exchange
• support for students and young researchers
• scientific, artistic and cultural exhibitions

Any cooperation undertaken in the name of LASA should be connected to the Academy’s registered purposes and supported by appropriate institutional authorisation.

The use of the LASA name, logo or institutional identity should also be consistent with the Academy’s governance and communication standards.

The registration completed in May 2024 provided LASA with the legal basis to begin building an international academic and cultural platform.

The next stage is not simply to increase the amount of information associated with the organisation. It is to develop a coherent institutional identity, improve governance practices and undertake activities that can demonstrate the Academy’s purpose in practice.

LASA remains a developing organisation. Its work will be advanced step by step, with attention to legal compliance, academic responsibility and long-term sustainability.
