Members and International Scholarly Network
The Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts (LASA) brings together scholars, researchers, professionals and distinguished contributors from different countries and disciplines.
LASA Members and Foreign Members are recognised for their academic achievements, professional contributions and engagement with the Academy’s mission of advancing knowledge across disciplines and borders.
Recognition as a Member or Foreign Member follows LASA’s academic review and governance process, including nomination or direct invitation, internal review, formal invitation and written or electronic acceptance.
LASA does not charge application, award or maintenance fees for either distinction.
LASA International Network
LASA’s international scholarly network brings together Members and Foreign Members from different countries and disciplines.
Through its Members and Foreign Members, LASA promotes academic exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, knowledge sharing and international cooperation.
The Academy continues to expand its global network by engaging with individuals whose achievements and contributions align with LASA’s mission.

LASA presents a rotating selection of public profiles from its international and interdisciplinary academic community.
The profiles below reflect the breadth of academic fields, institutions and regions represented across LASA. Their appearance in this section does not indicate a hierarchy, ranking or separate level of academic distinction.
All public profiles of Members and Foreign Members are available in the Member Directory. Profiles are published in accordance with LASA's privacy and publication procedures.
Academic Fields
LASA's Members and Foreign Members span eight broad Academic Fields, reflecting the interdisciplinary character of its academic community.
Individuals may be associated with more than one Academic Field; field counts are therefore non-exclusive. Public profiles are displayed in accordance with LASA's privacy and publication procedures.
I. Member and Foreign Member Distinctions
Member
The Member distinction is conferred upon individuals whose principal professional base is within the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, and whose academic, scientific, artistic, educational or cultural contributions are consistent with the mission of LASA.
Foreign Member
The Foreign Member distinction is conferred upon individuals whose principal professional base is outside the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and whose achievements and international engagement can contribute to the scholarly and cultural mission of LASA.
Member and Foreign Member are honorary institutional academic distinctions. They do not constitute legal membership of the association or confer voting, governance or representation rights.
The distinction between Member and Foreign Member is geographical and administrative. It does not indicate a difference in academic standing.
Nationality alone does not determine the distinction category. Where an individual has more than one professional affiliation, the principal place of professional activity at the time the distinction is conferred will normally apply.
II. Academic Recognition Framework
LASA recognises individuals whose academic achievements, professional contributions and engagement are aligned with the mission of the Academy.
Consideration may be based on:
- academic distinction;
- professional contribution;
- interdisciplinary engagement;
- contribution to knowledge exchange.
III. Nomination and Recognition Pathways
Recognition may follow a direct invitation by LASA, nomination by Members, or institutional recommendation. A Member or Foreign Member distinction is conferred only after internal review, formal invitation and written or electronic acceptance.
LASA Direct Invitation
LASA may identify and invite distinguished individuals whose achievements and contributions align with the Academy’s mission.
Nomination by Members
One or more current Members of the Academy may recommend a candidate and provide relevant background information. Additional supporting information may be requested where appropriate.
Institutional Recommendation
A university, research institution, learned society, cultural organisation or other relevant body may recommend an individual for consideration.
Where appropriate, supporting information may include:
- a curriculum vitae or professional profile;
- a brief summary of key achievements or representative work;
- supporting documents or references, where requested.
Where appropriate, LASA may request additional professional information to support its internal review.
V. Recognition Process
The Secretariat conducts an initial review of the candidate's background, submitted information and relevance to the mission of LASA.
Subject-specific or external advice may be sought where appropriate, depending on the candidate's field and background.
The nomination or invitation is considered through the Academy's internal review and governance procedures.
Candidates approved through the relevant governance procedure receive a formal written invitation. The Member or Foreign Member distinction becomes effective upon written or electronic acceptance by the invited individual.
Following written or electronic acceptance, LASA records the Member or Foreign Member distinction in its academic-distinction register. A Member or Foreign Member certificate may be issued following completion of the relevant procedure.
LASA may organise an induction, presentation or academic gathering at an appropriate time. Participation in such a ceremony is not a condition of the distinction.
