Jack Dongarra and Collaborators Recognised with a 2026 R&D 100 Award for Fenix

Jack Dongarra and his team have earned a 2026 R&D 100 Award for Fenix, an open‑source software enabling large‑scale computations to resume after failures. Joint‑developed with Sandia National Laboratories, this is Dongarra’s fifth R&D 100 recognition. LASA has congratulated the team.

Jack Dongarra, Foreign Member of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts (LASA) and Emeritus Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been recognised together with collaborators for the development of Fenix, a recipient of a 2026 R&D 100 Award.

Announced by R&D World on 6 August, Fenix was selected in the Software/Services category. The award listing identifies Sandia National Laboratories as the primary submitting organisation and the University of Tennessee’s Innovative Computing Laboratory as a co-developer.

According to the University of Tennessee, Professor Dongarra and the Innovative Computing Laboratory worked with Sandia National Laboratories to develop the open-source software framework. His team contributed techniques and technologies that help large-scale computing applications recover from hardware or process failures, restore lost work and resume computation without restarting from the beginning.

Fenix is freely available and has already been used in additional real-world applications. The University of Tennessee reports that the recognition marks the fifth R&D 100 Award associated with Professor Dongarra and the Innovative Computing Laboratory.

LASA congratulates Professor Dongarra and the collaborating teams on this recognition of their contribution to more resilient and efficient high-performance computing.
